Holmfirth Memorial & Learning Centre
Located in close proximity to the site for Hill House, the site is again located in Holmfirth, Kirklees, West Yorkshire. The area of the site available for development was approximately 1600m², and prior to design it contained a post office building, and a carpark. The brief of this project required the design of a ‘memorial building’, to which I also incorporated a café and learning centre also. The site sits adjacent to the Memorial Gardens and the River Holme, two important contextual elements which were considered in the development of my design. The intention of this design was to pay tribute to, and act as place of reflection for the lives that were lost and affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to this, an underground learning centre was also incorporated to educate and inform about COVID, disease and the importance of good health and hygiene. The basement floor is accessed via the main staircase, a ramp to the North and the internal staircase which leads into the prayer and reflection building. Above ground there are two buildings, the prayer and reflection building which houses a series of public and private reflection/prayer spaces, which spans across two floors, and the café building which is one storey. There is a glazed corridor which connects the two spaces, providing ease of transition between the spaces and a sense of connection. Charred timber cladding, a powerful and striking material was used seamlessly in combination with glazing to form the building envelope. Solid concrete walls and concrete columns are also incorporated to ensure the building is structurally secure. The footprint of the first floor is slightly larger than the ground floor, creating an overhang. This when combined with the glazed curtain wall appearing to support the timber clad first floor creates the appearance of a seemingly weightless first floor.
